City of Erie announces Summer Paving and Construction as part of 2025 Road Improvement Plan
Mayor Joe Schember and Public Works Director Jason Sayers have announced $3.4 million in projects for the 2025 paving and construction season as part of the 2025 Road Improvement Plan which includes:
- 24,850 tons of new hot-mix asphalt
- 11.1 linear miles of roadway will be paved this summer, which equates to about 22.2 lane miles
- Distribution on 48 east-side streets and 47 west-side streets
As in prior years, the summer paving program is divided according to work crews & funding sources. It will have five (5) proposed segments this year.
- 3 performed by contractors and 2 performed by our Bureau of Streets
Contract Work that will be competitively bid:
1. Funded by the Erie County Local Federal Aid Routes (LFAR) line item, as approved by the Erie Metropolitan Planning Organization.
- 7 City Streets at a cost estimate of $754,000
2. Funded by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program and will take place in low-to-moderate income neighborhoods, as designated by the federal government.
- 20 City Streets at a cost estimate of $885,000
3. Funded by the Erie County Liquid Fuels Program (which are monies that the City receives through the Pennsylvania gasoline tax) and will focus on the outlying areas.
- 20 City Streets at a cost estimate of $951,000
Bureau of Streets Work:
1. Funded by the CDBG Program and will take place in low-to-moderate income neighborhoods, as designated by the federal government.
- Work is currently underway this week.
- 21 City Streets at a cost estimate of $431,000
2. Funded by the Street Degradation Fees and will focus on the outlying areas.
- 27 City Streets at a cost estimate of $300,000
In addition, yesterday morning, Erie City Council voted affirmatively to release $1.2 million from the City’s Water Reserve Account to the City’s Capital Fund. $500,000 of the funds will be set aside for additional resurfacing needs. Following a very difficult winter, the streets can well use these additional monies. Therefore, the City is currently working on a supplemental paving list for late summer.
