UPDATE: More details about shooting of Erie Police Department patrol sergeant

On Sunday, July 30, 2023, at 4:50 a.m., Erie Police were alerted to reports of gunfire in the 500 block of East 22nd Street. Multiple officers responded and searched the area for any victims or evidence of a shooting. At 5:00 a.m., while officers were on the scene, a suspect opened fire on them from inside a residence.

A male Erie Police Department patrol sergeant was shot once in the leg and sought cover while other officers returned fire. Officers performed emergency medical aid on the wounded sergeant and transported him via police vehicle to UPMC Hamot.

The suspect, wearing ballistic armor, eventually exited the house and surrendered to officers on the scene. The suspect, who was unhurt, was taken into custody and transported to the Erie Police Station.

The sergeant, upon arrival at UPMC Hamot, was stabilized in the hospital’s trauma unit before he was taken into emergency surgery. Currently, the sergeant is listed as stable in UPMC Hamot’s Intensive Care Unit.

After consultation between the Erie Police Department, the Pennsylvania State Police, and the Erie County District Attorney’s office, the shooting investigation will be led by the Pennsylvania State Police in Lawrence Park Township.
