Social Media Policy

The City of Erie uses social media to interact with residents, businesses and visitors about public issues, events and distribution of information. Please submit your questions, comments and concerns to the Citizens Response Center at 814-870-1111 or at cityof.erie.pa.us. Please note the City of Erie’s social media pages are a moderated online discussion site and subject to PA Public Records Laws, and e-discovery laws and policies.

The City reserves the right to delete unacceptable posts and/or comments and ban users in the event we consider a comment or post to be harassment. The following are examples of unacceptable social networking content and comments. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and will be adjusted as issues arise. Examples are:

• Profane or obscene language or content;

• Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetrates discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, marital status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, or content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party;

• Infringement on copyrights or trademarks;

• Confidential or non-public information;

• Misinformation or misleading posts;

• Comments not topically related to the particular social medium article being commented upon;

• Comments in support of or opposition to political campaigns or ballot measures;

• Solicitations of commerce;

• Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity;

• Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems.

These guidelines must be displayed to users and will be made available at https://cityof.erie.pa.us. Any content removed based on these guidelines will be retained, including the time, date and identity of the poster when available.
