City of Erie releases 2024 summer recreation guide

The City of Erie’s summer recreation guide is now available at City Hall, Erie School District schools, community centers, and online at All programs listed in the guide are free to the City of Erie residents and focus on grades K-12, though ages vary for each program.

“Summer is almost here and there is no better time to get outside!”, said Erie Mayor Joe Schember. “The City of Erie is home to numerous public parks and beautiful greenspaces. We are pleased to announce several very exciting, fun, and educational summer recreation programs throughout Erie in 2024.”

Highlighted below are just a few of the many summer recreation options that City of Erie youth may enjoy.

  • Footlights Theatre Performing Arts Center is celebrating their 50th anniversary with a performance of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka July 24-26. Call or visit to register.
  • Spoon’s Summer Basketball League is returning for their 34th year. Spoon’s League provides summer basketball for inner city youth at the Spoon’s Courts, E. 19th Street between French and Holland streets and the Bayview Park Courts, W. 2nd St. between Cherry and Walnut Streets.   • Learn to swim programs will again be featured at Rodger Young Park and the Downtown YMCA.
  • Working with other law enforcement organizations, Erie Police Department’s youth programs such as the Police Athletic League and the Community Outreach Program, will break down barriers and build positive relationships between the officers and participants.
  • The City of Erie Housing Authority (HACE) has developed a comprehensive Youth Development Program from June 10 – Aug. 23. It includes weekly sports and educational mini-camps including the mentor/youth junior golf clinic lessons at J.C. Martin Golf Course, mentor/youth junior learn-to-fish clinic at John Horan Garden apartments and Presque Isle State Park, and the Erie County Public Library bookmobile at Erie Heights, 4026 Garden Ave.

Registration deadlines for summer programs are quickly approaching. City residents are encouraged to review the guide and sign up as soon as possible.
